Nominations for The Kavli Prize begin in the fall of every odd-numbered year: open on September 1 and close on December 1. Nominations are open to all scientists conducting basic research in astrophysics, nanoscience and neuroscience. Self-nominations are not accepted and deceased persons cannot be nominated.
The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters appoints three, five-member Kavli Prize Selection Committees – one for each field. The three committees work independently of each other to discuss and review the nominations.
The open call is announced through a variety of channels including, but not limited to:
- Scientific academies and societies internationally
- Email distribution to university leadership and deans of schools in astrophysics, nanoscience and neuroscience
- Advertising in scientific publications
- Social media
Online submission forms and criteria can be found on The Kavli Prize website when the nomination period begins.
